How do you beat the winter blues?

Winter is upon us (in the northern hemisphere at least) which means our outdoor climbing time is severely limited by chilly temperatures, poor weather, and shortened daylight hours. Disappointing, to say the least. Many of us head indoors to our local climbing gym to feed our "rock habit", but what do you do when you get burnt out on pulling plastic? How else do YOU beat the winter blues?

rip it up on plastic!

or do some other activities to keep yourself trained. Like, if you're watching tv or something work out one of those stress balls, it builds the strength in your fingers.

just an idea; I do it all the time

the more relevant question seems to be, if you don't like it there, then what are you doing there?

here in SoCal the crags are too hot till about 2 or 3, when they finally go in the shade...did 8 pitches today and got sunburned...

remember that movie Fargo? the overwhelming impression that movie left me with was...

why do people live there?

I just give all my money to the gym. Only way to survive all winter.

I'm not dissing indoor climbing, in fact I enjoy it. But don't you think it can get a little dull repeating the same routes and problems? Also, staying cooped up in what is essentially a warehouse full of sweaty people isn't as fun as being outside (with a bunch of sweaty people, possibly) enjoying the work of the best route builder there is, Mother Nature. When I get tired of climbing the same problems at the gym, I work out with weights, play hackeysack, or roll around town on a skateboard. I was wondering what others do when they're in a climbing funk (as I recently was)....

I live in Minnesota and can't stand to be couped up inside all winter and I hate the gym!I hooked up with a friend and we went camping on the North shore of Lake Superior this weekend. The night we did campout it was -10F ,got to the camp at about 9:00pm and set up the tent, built a fire and made coffee.I wasn't cold but the ground was so uneven it kept me from really sleeping good and I had dreams about sleeping on a warm couch and I had dreams about eating at a buffet.Still alot better than sitting in the house.I even went rock climbing today, easy stuff and led it too in snowboots! It didn't break 0 F today, nice and cold.Get out and have some fun.Wildtrail I can relate to the knees man,had surgery on both of them.
