Powder coating is like spray painting but alot tougher.the process is as follows:the prep first you remove any old paint or oil from the surface, then you put an electo static charge through the object (this makes the paint stick better) you use a primer then apply the top coat which comes in powder form. After the object is completly covered in powder you put it in a room sized oven and cook it at 180-200 degrees for half an hour.the result is a puker finish which is tougher than normal paint........i have found that it is perfect for bmx frames and parts because they get nocked about so much ,it lasts longer but like all paint jobs its not unbrakeable.from what i have seen so far you can get some really trick colours as well, even perl and metalic. the only thing is the ojbect in question has got to be made of metal.ie.steel ,alluminium ,stainless steel, ect.
i know of a company called aardwork powder coating that does this process and they are currently working on my frame forlks and handle bars. ill let you know what it cost me when its done......hope this info can help someone out there as it has helped me .M.

this is incorrect. powder coating is basicaly what its name is, a coat of powder. positevely charged poweder(colored) is sprayed onto the negatively object which is being coated. it then is baked for hours which melts the powder into a glass like surface that forms to the object and is as hard as steel. it doesnt chip easily and when u dent the object, the coating dents too, it doesnt flake off. there is no primer or paint invloved in powder coating. it is fairley expensive.
